LBS: the next big thing in marketing events

Revealed in a presentation by Google, 81% of purchases on a smartphone are spontaneous whereas only 19% of purchases are planned in the US. So what does this mean for marketers? By applying LBS to their programs, sales can be increased dramatically.

So what is LBS? LBS means location based services. Sensors, maps, telecom signals can portray your location to servers in the clouds. Marketers can then push their promotional contents to you based on where you are and your possible needs. Since you are in the vicinity of the products or services, you may approach the location and buy that service or product.

Of course at the beginning, you may be bombarded with all sorts of product promotions, but once your personal data and preferences start to accumulate, marketers can also become more accurate to your actual needs. For example, if you are into science fiction and not into comedy, last minute purchases of “Star Trek" tickets may be pushed to you while tickets to “The Hangover" won’t.

I start to smell new business models cooking and look forward to major LBS companies launching!
